Hey it’s Emily!

Hi everyone!  My name is Emily.  I’m from Kings Park, Long Island and this is my first semester at SUNY Cortland.  I am a sophomore transfer student from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.  I’m super excited to be here at SUNY Cortland and I’m looking forward to making new friends.  I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember and my major is English Adolescent Education.

Hi!

Hey guys, my name is Iris. I’m a transfer student in my junior year majoring in biology. I received an Associates Degree in Biology from SUNY Broome Community College. I’m from Binghamton, NY but I’ve also lived in Long Island and Montrose, PA. I love hockey, specifically Ottawa Senators. I’m excited to meet new people in this course as well as further my education.

Fun fact: I can speak 5 different languages.

Introducing Me

My name is Michaela Williams and I am from New Berlin, NY (a small town about an hour and fifteen minutes east from here). Although I am a junior, this is my first semester on this campus. I transferred from SUNY Morrisville where I received my Associates degree in Business Administration. I am continuing my education in Sport Management in hopes of becoming a marketer or ticket sales director at a sports facility some day. Although I am not a student athlete, I am a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Syracuse University football and basketball team! I am looking forward to meeting all of you and making new friends!

Brian Poerio

This will be my junior year in college, however, I am a new transfer from SUNY Suffolk. Suffolk is a community college I attended following graduating early from high school.  I am immensely entertained by literature and how it could affect culture, thoughts, and add perspective to a situation once thought to only be two dimensional. I am a certified Search and Rescue Instructor on Long Island. However, the certification carries throughout all U.S. territories should it be needed elsewhere. My personal favorite novel/movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. The story, at the core, is a journey of innocence but I feel the story also dips into aspects of what it means to be American. What I mean by this is that the values of an American should be held equal throughout, simply based on the foundation and premise the countries roots were found upon. However the story shows several perspectives of America through three key characters (Society, Scout, and Atticus) and these characters are able to intertwine with the theme of innocence, but also mix in other themes if the story is seen through that lens.

Hello!

Welcome

Welcome to “ENG252 – Intro to Multicultural Literature”! I’m Professor Savonick and this is my first semester teaching at SUNY Cortland. Previously, I taught for five years at Queens College. I can’t wait for our semester together!

Prior to our first course session, there are a few things that you can do to ensure a smooth start to the semester.

  1. Read through the syllabus. I will make small adjustments throughout the semester, but this should give you a general idea of what will be covered in our course. We will go over the syllabus on the first day of class, so please come prepared with questions.
  2. Register to use this course site. Before you are able to access readings, blog, and comment on our course site, you will need to register. For this course, you will be writing blogs that are publicly available. For that reason, I encourage you to sign up for an account with a username that will not disclose your identity. Your username and name should include your first name and last initial and I recommend you set “Who is allowed to see this field?” to “All Members” so that only our class can identify you. Remember to save your username and password! Once you register, you should receive a confirmation email. I will then activate your account and you will be all set to read and write.
  3. You might find it useful to bookmark this site.

Enjoy the last few days of summer!
